Already from the ancient Roman Empire multi-seat, padded reclining furniture are known, which were used however as dining sofas. Up to three people were lying on a piece of furniture, supported themselves with the left hand and attacked with the right to the food. Because the Romans enjoyed talking while eating, they arranged the loungers in a horseshoe shape around the table. Even today, sofas in U-shape are particularly well suited to sit comfortably together after work in a sociable round. They take up less floor space than individual pieces of furniture and also allow the extended family to sit together in front of the TV. U-shaped sofas have the further advantage that the conversation partners sitting outside can look at each other’s faces while entertaining, without distorting their necks.
