Retail lighting can be seen as
functional as well as aesthetic or decorative.  Functional in that the store’s employees
need to see what they are working on and that the customers who come in can
see where it is that they are ready.
It should be aesthetic in that customers must be attracted by the
lights so that they may be interested in knowing what is in the store.  Here are some ways in which lighting should
be used in stores.

Lighting to
attract

As previously mentioned,
lighting can either attract or deter customers from entering any store.  When the customers are inside, the light
can direct them to different parts of the store and control the customers’
traffic flow to certain areas.  All of
this will help store owners keep customers focused on the products and areas
on display.

To achieve this, the first layer of
lighting is used, which is ambient lighting.
Recessed lighting works best here because it not only provides plenty
of light for the entire store but also gives the store a polished
look.

Lighting to mark
goods

Here, the goods are marked
so that the customers’ eyes are directed towards the specific goods that are
in the store.  Accent lighting works
best here, as the focus of the light is only on the goods.  You will thus see, in some stores, goods
islands for items such as shoes, clothes or cosmetics be well lit, with many
customers who can clearly see the details of the goods.  This type of retail
lighting
also used in other goods such as
jewels.

Lighting to create
atmosphere and brand
image

Lighting has a way of
influencing your psychology, and some stores have realized this and are now
using the basics of light storage to their advantage.  Smart retailers will thus use different
light levels to create an atmosphere that promotes their customers, who in
turn will be made comfortable and do not mind spending more time in the
store.  Thus, warm light sources are
used to create a comfortable atmosphere that encourages customers to stay
longer and spend more money in the long run.
Some stores will still apply retail
lighting
who use cooler light sources and still have customers
who prefer the atmosphere presented by
it.

Lighting for task
management

Here, tasks such as
trying on an item in the locker room and entering the sales details in the
reception must be lit.  The dressing
room is particularly sensitive as this is where the decision to either go
with the item or not is made.  Task
lighting will thus be very effective in these two
areas.
