Advantages and disadvantages Pine wood

Pinewood is one of the most common woods in European forests. In almost all areas of wood processing, pinewood is used and it can be easily worked. In Central Europe, the pine is the second most common forest tree species and it belongs to the group of conifers. Especially in the large, damp, cool forest areas of Germany, Poland, Russia and Scandinavia pinewood occurs. If the pinewood comes from these regions, then it is called Nordic Pinewood. Pinewood is cultivated outside of Europe in parts of South America, America and Asia. For the afforestation of forests pinewood is used worldwide, because it grows very fast. The pine wood has short transport distances as domestic wood and so it can be processed cheaply and quickly. For many articles of daily life, pinewood is used, for example for paper.

The look

In pinewood, the color is whitish-yellow and this can go to reddish-yellow. Over time, the wood may darken and then it will turn reddish-brown. Thanks to the treatment with wood preservatives, the natural re-coloring can be slowed down. There is a clear grain of pine wood and this is characterized by contrasting medium-brow tree rings. In addition, there are knotholes and irregularities. In the pine wood, the resin channels are visible to the naked eye and pinewood is fresh, then it smells very intensively of tree resin.

The properties

The pinewood can be processed very well because it belongs to the medium-hard woods. The wood does not break easily and is elastic. If pinewood was not treated then it is not very weather resistant. When in contact with soil, the wood can quickly rot. Wood preservative treatment can significantly extend the life of pinewood. Pine wood is sensitive to high temperatures and then resin may leak. The shrinkage of pine wood is moderate and the wood can easily warp in changing climatic conditions. For the infestation of blue mushrooms, especially the moist pine wood is absolutely vulnerable. On the basic strength of the wood, the mushrooms have no influence, but the light pine wood is discolored. In addition, the paint is destroyed. In the sunlight, the pine products may fade and therefore these products should only be exposed evenly to sunlight.

The usage

The pinewood is mainly used in furniture making and, for example, in chairs, tables or cabinets made of solid wood. Pine wood is also used as a veneer. Pine wood is also available for cut and round timber, and this is used in the manufacture of fiber and chipboard. Pine wood plays a central role in the production of cell and paper materials. Pinewood is used as structural and structural timber in many door frames, window frames, wood cladding or roof structures. As fuel, pinewood is used in appropriate heating systems, because the firing qualities are very good.

The advantages

  • The wood has a low weight
  • The processing properties are good
  • The environmental balance is good, because it is a local wood
  • The wood is cheap

The disadvantages

  • The color of the wood changes when exposed to sunlight
  • Bläuepilze the wood is vulnerable
  • The wood is not weatherproof

The prices

Pine wood is a popular material in furniture construction and also in many other sawn timber products. The price for pinewood is composed of various factors. On the one hand, it is the origin of the impact, the industrial processing and the quality of the quality of the individual types of pinewood. So there are also the price for this popular wood strong deviations. The comparison to other types of wood and the difference in terms of the final use of this popular type of wood also seem interesting.

Sawn timber in comparison

You will surely have gotten to know this type of wood yourself and you will also be familiar with the characteristics of robustness. Sawn timber is obtained industrially and this type of wood belongs to the rather favorable species with a price of around 310 – 370 per m³. This target price refers to the quality grade I / II, which belongs to the lower varieties of this species. High-quality pinewood furniture that is offered as sawn timber can be purchased in a price range of around 460 to 570 euros per m³. So ranked this highest quality level even in the price level with spruce wood. Pine wood is thus considered to be favorable softwood with a very interesting drawing and very good qualities. Hardwoods are in a price range that stands out very much from pinewood.

Other types of wood

Hardwoods are considered to be harder and therefore more sustainable types of wood. However, this should not mean for you that pine wood does not reach usage times of several hundred years. If you compare the price difference between pine wood and beech, then you will discover that the m³ beech wood is about 310, – Euro more expensive than comparable pine wood. This has to do with the factor of growth and durability, because on the one hand, beech trees grow very slowly, and longer periods are also to be expected when using them. This also applies to the calorific value of beech and pinewood. Oak wood is even around 510, – € in m³ more expensive than pine wood and there you can clearly see the classification of price ranges between conifers and hardwoods.

Special pine wood types

Individual pinewoods from around the High Alps, for example, and the Weymouthskiefer or Strobe, which is imported from North America, beat the price records of comparable softwoods at the price of model-making wood. It is of course interesting that these varieties are not always available in sufficient quantity on the market and so the price can differ. It also depends on the individual importers of these special pine woods, which incorporate their design in the price.

Industrial pine and logs from pines

Let’s devote ourselves to the local pine trees and their prices. Trunk wood is traded at about 70 to 90 euros per cubic meter after Einschlag. Domestic spruce is already traded here in this segment of the log timber with 90 – 110 euros per cubic meter. Here too, the price differs according to the quantity present. Industry pine, which is needed as construction and timber in the industry costs about 25 euros the space meter. In comparison, you have to expect spruce wood of the same grade with about 29 euros per cubic meter as the offer price.

fuel

Hardwoods are considered the material with the highest material density and the best calorific value. Accordingly, the price of hardwood as fuel is very high. If you compare the favorable price of pine wood in comparison and with appropriately processed mixed products such as pine wood pellets, the products achieve considerable calorific values despite the low price. For example, pinewood is also a sought-after product when heating with wood, which results in a profitability in the price and performance ratio of pinewood.
